SIMA can offer EB refined Nb bar, as well as Nb scrap.
It is a steely-gray, lustrous, hard metal that takes a high polish and has a high melting point.
A major development was the discovery that steel could be made highly resistant to corrosion and discolouration by adding chromium to form stainless steel.
This application, along with chrome plating (electroplating with chromium) are currently the highest-volume uses of the metal.
Chromium and ferrochromium are produced from the single commercially viable ore, chromite, by silicothermic or aluminothermic reaction or by roasting and leaching processes.
APPLICATIONS IN METALLURGY
Hafnium is used in iron, titanium, niobium, tantalum, and other metal alloys.
An alloy used for liquid rocket thruster nozzles, for example the main engine of the Apollo Lunar Modules is C103, which consists of 89% niobium, 10% hafnium and 1% titanium.
Small additions of hafnium increase the adherence of protective oxide scales on nickel-based alloys.
